SU Children's and Young Adult Literature Festival Continues Through Apr. 16

Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou HamerSALISBURY, MD---The public has the chance to meet renowned authors and illustrators during ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥’s 2016 Children’s and Young Adult Literature Festival, held Tuesday-Saturday, April 12-16.

Events begin with a talk by New York Times bestselling children’s author Jennifer Holm 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Holm is the recipient of three Newbery Honors for her novels Our Only May Amelia, Penny from Heaven and Turtle in Paradise. She collaborates with her brother, Matthew Holm, on two graphic novel series: the Eisner Award-winning Babymouse and the bestselling Squish. Her latest novel is The Fourteenth Goldfish.

A young author reception with guest Carole Boston Weatherford is 5 p.m. Thursday, April 14, in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center. Weatherford’s books include Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom (illustrated by Kadir Nelson), winner of the Caldecott Honor, Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration and NAACP Image Award. She also received Coretta Scott King honors for Becoming Billie Holiday, Before John Was a Jazz Giant and Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer, and a second NAACP Image Award for Gordon Parks: How the Photographer Captured Black and White America.

The festival continues with the conference “Diversity, Art and the Environment: The World of Children’s Books” from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 16, in the Teacher Education and Technology Center’s Curriculum Resource Center, Room 226.

In addition to Weatherford, participating authors and illustrators and guests include Bryan Collier, Teena Gorrow, Jen Cullerton Johnson, Mark Robinson, Vanessa Salgado and Joe Turner. (Many of the authors and illustrators also visit local schools throughout the week.) Registration is $35, $20 for SU ID holders. Single-session options are available for $10.
