Student Events & Initiatives
Student organizations such as the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Environmental Students Association (ESA) plan sustainability-themed events and initiatives throughout the campus such as:
SGA BIG Event - A long-time tradition at SU, the SGA hosts its annual neighborhood cleanup event by sending volunteers to residential neighbors of the university in need of mulching, raking and general outdoor restoration.
SGA "I Love ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥" - Extending beyond the immediate campus community, the citywide cleanup event sees students, campus organizations and other university members band together to help ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ at large. Volunteers work at locations across the city, including sites such as the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Zoo and the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ City Park, assisting with various tasks and assignments for the general public's benefit.
SGA Earth Week – The SGA hosts various sustainability events annually during Earth Week. Events include potted plant giveaways, campus wide recycling competitions, guest lectures, movie screenings, petting zoo, and farmer’s market.
SGA Recycle Madness – Once per semester, the SGA hosts Recycle Madness a campus wide recycling competition. Prizes are awarded to the top three student organizations and individuals who recycle the most material.
ESA Thrift Market – Once per semester the ESA hosts a Thrift Market event where students can purchase or sell their gently used clothing.
ESA Trash Fashion Show – The ESA hosts a Trash Fashion Show during Earth Week every year. All clothing featured in the show is made of recycled materials.
ESA Reusable Cup Campaign – The ESA has coordinated with SU Dining Services and multiple coffee shops on campus to offer customers a $0.50 discount on beverage purchases if you bring your own reusable cup.
ESA EcoBrick Bench – To help promote sustainability and creative reuse, the ESA constructed an EcoBrick bench out of recycled soda bottles and plastic bags. The EcoBrick Bench is located in Cool Beans Café within the GSU.
