PACE Hosts 'Race and Identity in the United States' Series August 29-December 5
SALISBURY, MD---¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥’s Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE) sponsors the weekly lecture series “Race and Identity in the United States” 7-8:30 p.m. most Mondays from August 29-December 5 in Fulton Hall Room 111.
Faculty members from a variety of disciplines, along with guests speakers, explore the relevant, complex and, at times, volatile topics of race and identity. Areas of focus include the intersection of race and class, race and the media, environmental racism, mass incarceration, privilege and oppression, “mixed raceness,” cultural appropriation, changing language and terms about race, politics and being an ally.
Each lecture will stand on its own; however, the series is available as a one-credit pass/fail course for students and community members who plan to attend each presentation and participate in written assignments. Those wishing to enroll in the course should sign up for IDIS 280.

September 5 – No lecture (Labor Day)
September 12 – “The Numbers: Demographics and Disproportionate Representation”
September 19 – “Identity, Socialization and Ethnocentrism”
September 26 – “Race-Talk, Race-Thinking and Power: A Philosophical Introduction” with Dr. Cristina Camarano
October 3 – “Screening Civil Rights: From Birmingham and Selma to Ferguson” with Dr. Aniko Bodroghkozy of the University of Virginia
October 10 – “Mixed-Race Legacies from Jamestown to President Obama” with Dr. Aston Gonzalez
October 17 – No lecture
October 24 – “Spinning the Election” with Drs. Sarah Surak and Toran Hansen
October 31 – “Moving Beyond the Click-Bait: Understanding Spectacles of Race in Visual Culture” with Dr. Victoria Pass
November 7 – “Building a Multi-Racial Poor People’s Movement” with Cheri Honkala, national coordinator for the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign
November 14 – “Mass Incarceration: Causes and Solutions” with Dr. Jennifer Jewell
November 21 – No lecture
November 28 – “Rememory in Toni Morrison’s Beloved” with Dr. James King
December 5 – “Coping with Racism: How to Be an Ally” with Dr. Yuki Okubo
