Author, Former CNN Reporter Lewis Speaks at SU
SALISBURY, MD---In 2006, former CNN journalist Elliott Lewis examined the continuously shifting landscape of self-identity in his book Fade: My Journeys in Multiracial America.
Today, celebrities from Tiger Woods to Barack Obama change the way many people think about race. Lewis discusses these changing opinions during the presentation “It’s a Multiracial Thing!” 7 p.m. Monday, October 20, in the Wicomico Room of ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥’s Guerrieri University Center.
Fade weaves Lewis’ life story as a biracial American with the voices of dozens of others, revealing stark generational differences in the ways people of mixed race have come to terms with their identities.
“People often make snap judgments of anyone who says they’re biracial,” said Lewis. “Some people think we’re confused or we’re trying to escape being black. Others go to the opposite extreme and think we’re exotic and the wave of the future. Neither view captures our reality.”
Currently a freelance television journalist in Washington, D.C., Lewis is a former board member of the National Association of Black Journalists. Sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, his talk is free and the public is invited. A book signing follows.
