SU Hosts Month of Events Dedicated to Salsa

¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, MD---¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ invites the public to experience the music and rhythms of salsa throughout the month of March.

Festivities begin with salsa dance Lessons 7 p.m. Tuesdays, March 4 and 11. Participants will dive into the essentials, embrace the rhythm and experience the vibrant essence of salsa with instructors Charlin and JonJon. Comfortable shoes and a water bottle, are recommended. All levels are welcome Non-SU students under age 18 must be accompanied by a guardian.

  • Wednesday, March 12, 7 p.m., Fulton Hall 111 - Herman van Apeldoorn Film Center - Film screening: Yo no me llamo Ruben Blades (Ruben Blades Is Not My Name): Latin American icon Ruben Blades, whose “thinking man’s salsa” has earned him the nickname “the Bob Dylan of Latin America,” was at the center of the New York salsa revolution in the 1970s. His socially charged lyrics and rhythms brought salsa music to an international audience. Blades has won 17 Grammy awards, acted in Hollywood, earned a law degree from Harvard University, and run for president of his native Panama. The film is introduced by Dr. Corinne Pubill, SU professor of modern languages, and followed by a question-and-answer session.
  • Tuesday, March 25, 7 p.m., Guerrieri Student Union, Wicomico Room - Music workshop with Las Guaracheras: Explore the rich fusion of Afro-Caribbean and Latin American rhythms that characterize the music of Las Guaracheras, an all-women salsa sextet from Cali, Colombia.
  • Wednesday, March 26, 7 p.m., Holloway Hall, Jackson Family Auditorium - Las Guaracheras concert: Tickets are free, but required. For tickets, visit SU’s online box office

Salsa events are co-sponsored by SU’s Office of Cultural Affairs and Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS). Admission is free and the public is invited.
