SU Relay For Life Raises More Than $50,000

SALISBURY, MD---Those in attendance laughed and cried; they walked and they spent time reflecting on those who were lost and encouraged those still fighting the battle against cancer.

On a night that was full of emotion, the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ and surrounding communities came together for the SU’s annual Relay For Life, raising more than $50,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society.

The total - currently $50,888 - surpassed SU’s goal for the year and is the highest fundraising amount in the past four years for the event. Donations will be accepted through the end of the semester. To date, SU has raised nearly $2 million through Relay For Life.

“I thought the event was fantastic,” said Dr. Heather Holmes, SU Relay For Life advisor. “We were able to engage more teams, more students, and faculty and staff in the event, which has been rebuilding since returning to an in-person event after the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The evening included moving speeches from Dr. Lisa Seldomridge, a cancer survivor and SU professor of nursing, to kick off the survivor lap; and Logan Krebs, Relay For Life development chair, who discussed her late mother’s battle with cancer as part of the luminaria ceremony.

“Portraits of Hope” was a new initiative introduced this year, displaying images of faculty, staff and student survivors. Attendees also had the opportunity to collect items for cancer care kits as part of a community service initiative associated with SU President Carolyn Ringer Lepre’s Inauguration Week activities. The kits will benefit cancer patients at TidalHealth centers on the Lower Eastern Shore.

“I am so proud of the student-run Relay For Life committee and the students, faculty and staff who supported this important cause,” said Holmes. “It was an amazing night.”
