SU's Staff Senate recently built a wheelchair ramp for a local family through Chesapeake Housing Mission. The project is just one of many acts of volunteerism conducted by the SU community during the holiday season.

SU Community Gives Back During Holiday Season

By SU Public Relations

SALISBURY, MD---¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ students, faculty and staff are preparing for the holidays with projects that benefit the whole community and beyond. This year’s efforts include:

  • GIFTS FOR FOSTER CARE YOUTH: Students, faculty and staff in the School of Social Work are helping children in the local foster care system by picking an ornament from a holiday tree marked with one child’s gift wish and filling that request.
  • BE A SANTA TO A SENIOR: SU volunteers also are providing gifts to local seniors who may be financially challenged, in a health care facility, or alone for the holidays, as part of Home Instead’s annual “Be a Santa to a Senior” initiative. These trees are hosted by Career Services, Conference Services, Financial Services, the Guerrieri Student Union Information Desk, Housing and Residence Life, Human Resources, Physical Plant, Student Affairs, the Student Government Association and University Police.
  • LAMBDA ETA SUPPORTING LOCAL CHILDREN: Students in SU’s Lambda Eta chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau international nursing honor society are working with the Delaware Adolescent Program to collect gifts for a local teen mother and her baby. In addition, Lambda Eta members are making no-sew blankets for Project Linus, which provides handmade blankets to help comfort seriously ill and traumatized children.
  • GIVE-AND-GO SUPPORTS STUDENTS, LOCAL RESIDENTS: Physical Plant and Housing and Residence Life have set up “Give-and-Go” bins in SU residence halls, allowing students to donate food, clothing and accessories, and household items that will benefit those on campus through SU’s Food for the Flock food pantry and others through the Hope and Life Outreach (HALO) Ministry.
  • ATHLETICS TEAMS GIVING BACK: Varsity baseball and women’s basketball team members – as well as Monica Polizzi, SU’s new director of athletics and campus recreation – have spent multiple days serving at HALO’s food kitchen. The men’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s swimming, softball and volleyball teams are sponsoring local families in need with holiday meals.
  • TOYS FOR TOTS: The Franklin P. Perdue School of Business again is collecting toys for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program for the 21st year.
  • SALVATION ARMY RED KETTLE CAMPAIGN: Faculty and staff in the Perdue School also are volunteering their time for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign around the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ area this December.
  • CHESAPEAKE HOUSING MISSION: SU volunteers give their time and effort to make others’ lives a little easier, working with Chesapeake Housing Mission to build wheelchair ramps for homes in the area. SU’s Staff Senate recently completed a local build.
  • GIVING TIME TO LOCAL STUDENTS: Individuals from SU’s Richard A. Henson School of Science and Technology, Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts, Samuel W. and Marilyn C. Seidel School of Education, Athletics, Career Services Office and student groups are in discussion with Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore to volunteer at the new Perdue Henson Junior Achievement Center in ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥.
  • THE BIG EVENT: Coordinated by the Student Government Association, SU students combined to give 1,000 hours of time this semester during the 19th Annual Big Event. Through the community cleanup effort, students perform yardwork, including leaf raking and mulching, for University neighbors.
