SU's PACE Hosts Discussion with Former DNC Chairman Tom Perez

Tom PerezSALISBURY, MD---¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥’s Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE) hosts a virtual discussion with Tom Perez, former U.S. secretary of labor and Democratic National Committee chairman, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 27.

Perez will discuss civil rights, community organization and public service.

The son of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, he put himself through college with Pell Grants and by working in garbage removal. After becoming the first Latino elected to the Montgomery County (MD) Council and serving as board president of CASA de Maryland, he served in President Barack Obama’s administration for eight years. He first was head of the Civil Rights Division, where he led the charge against police misconduct and voter suppression. Then, as secretary of labor, he fought to protect and expand opportunities for America’s working people – from better wages and overtime pay, to retirement security and collective bargaining rights.
