SU Celebrates Recent Successes

SU Represented at USM Center for Academic Innovation Faculty Showcase

Seventeen SU faculty presented on teaching innovation and lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic at the University System of Maryland’s Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation Faculty Showcase. Participants and presentations included:

•    Dr. Carolina Bown (Communication): “Experiential Learning During COVID-19: Lessons Learned from Micro-Internships and Virtual Networking”

•    Drs. Sarah Surak (Environmental Studies and Political Science) and María Fernanda Batista Lobo (La Universidad Latinoamericana de Ciencia y Tecnología, ULACIT): “Global Learning Without Leaving Your Seat: International Classroom Collaborations During COVID-19 and Beyond”

•    Letha Moszer, Sue Park and Kathleen Arban (Social Work): “Pandemonium or Progress? Navigating Remote Learning During a Pandemic”

•    Drs. Chrys Egan (Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts), Echo Leaver (Psychology), Paul Scovell (Communication) and Brittany Foutz (Conflict Analysis and Dispute Resolution): “Remote Teaching Specialists: Reimagining Liberal Arts Instruction During the Pandemic”

•    Dr. Jennifer Cox (Communication): “‘Kollaborating’ with Kahoot! Teaching Writing Using Quiz Apps”

•    Drs. Alison Dewald, Cynthia Watson and Mindy Howard (Chemistry) and student Kayla Sealover: “At Home with Intermolecular Forces: A Remote Lab Module for Chemistry General Education Students”

•    Drs. Joshua Sokoloski and Anita Brown (Chemistry): “Lab in the Time of COVID-19”

•    Dr. Jim Fox (Education Leadership): “The Connective Power of Video Feedback and Video Messages”

•    Mike Koval (Accounting and Legal Studies): “Using Video Storyboards to Prepare Students for Flipped Classroom Assignments”

SU Accepted Into AAC&U Project on Civic and Community Engagement

SU was one of only 18 campuses in the U.S. to be accepted into the Association of American Colleges & Universities’ (AAC&U’s) project to “Advance Evidence on the Efficacy of Civic and Community-Based Engagement in Higher Education,” funded by the Lumina Foundation.

The project will culminate in the release of a summary report that will include recommendations for how individual campuses — and higher education as a whole — can best support civic skill-building for all students. SU’s participation is led by the Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement under the leadership of Dr. Alexander Pope (Secondary and Physical Education).

Eleven from SU Complete CEFP

Eleven SU facilities and capital planning employees recently completed their Certification of Educational Facilities Professionals (CEFP) from APPA – Leadership in Educational Facilities, demonstrating their commitment to professional development, leadership and mastery of the facilities management experience.

They included Nancy Birch, work control center manager; Frank Bowen, assistant director of horticulture and grounds; Keith Brown, building trades manager; Jonathan Cooper, Physical Plant assistant director of building trades; Ronald Facello, assistant director of facilities services; Glen Hughes, building trades manager; Kurt Jefferson, building trades manager; Neil Kennovin, building trades manager; Kevin Mann, Physical Plant director; Zachary Parker, building trades manager; and Brian Waller, environmental safety specialist.

“I couldn’t be prouder of these employees who have achieved this difficult and highly regarded certification,” said Eric Berkheimer, associate vice president of facilities and capital management. “Their dedication to bettering themselves is a great reflection of SU’s mission and values.”
