Youth Innovation Academy

The Youth Innovation Academy is a program for middle school girls and boys focusing on leadership, communication, technology, and innovation. The academy enhances leadership competence and confidence through engaging, applied projects tackling real community issues.

Business Simulation Academy

This exciting academy will allow students to participate in active business simulation games, that will teach them about business processes and activities. They will learn basic accounting, decision analysis, and business processes while using an enterprise system. They will gain hands-on experience to understand the format, and structure for business tasks and reports.

Eastern Shore Writing Project: Young Writers Workshop

This exciting academy offers students a space for informal, playful, creative, and expressive writing. The students have the opportunity to sharpen their writing skills, develop a creative writing project, and collaborate with their peers. On the last day, students share a piece of their original writing during an Open Mic showcase!

We Read to Change Book Club Academy

  • Monday - Friday / June 24, 2024 to June 28, 2024
  • 9 am to Noon - Lunch provided from Noon to 1 pm

This half-day academy will be a week-long book club experience for students in middle school who love to read and are passionate about social change. The students will interact with their peers by reading the same novel during the week. They will engage in discussions, and other activities to accompany the book that they are reading. The reading and activities will be facilitated by an instructor and two teaching assistants. The students will have the opportunity to improve their reading skills, participate in critical thinking activities, socially engage with their peers and they will have the opportunity to visit an area non-profit agency that assists members of our community.

3D Printing Explorers Academy

Journey into making with printers and pens! Welcome to an introduction to 3D Printing. Students will learn about 3D printing technology and applications. They will experience hands-on practice and explore creativity with 3D pens. The students will work in teams to brainstorm and work collaboratively on a group project using 3D pen freehand techniques and making 3D structures. The students will present their work and receive constructive feedback from their peers. There will be a final showcase event where the students will share their projects with family and friends.

Environmental Literacy Through Canoeing on the Eastern Shore

Prerequisite: Students attending this academy must be able to swim.

This academy will inform and inspire students to learn more about the environment and global challenges through canoeing around the waterways of the Eastern Shore. Students will learn how they can be a voice and find ways to help others understand global issues related to the watershed of the Chesapeake Bay.

  • Monday - Friday / July 8, 2024 to July 12, 2024
  • Monday - Thursday, July 8 to July 11 - 9 am to Noon (lunch provided)
  • Friday, July 12, 2024 - 9 am to 4 pm.  The students will travel to Assateague Island.
  • Grades: Middle and High School
  • Location: ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Campus, local waterways, and Assateague Island

Entrepreneurship Academy

Want to start a business someday? ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥’s Entrepreneurship team will lead the students through the process of idea creation, whiteboarding, collaborative thinking, assessment, building ideas, idea design, prototype development, logo and marketing materials, pitch training, and practice. Students will participate in a final pitch presentation of their design and marketing plan.

We Read to Lead Book Club Academy

This half-day academy will be a week-long book club experience for students who love to read. The students will enjoy the opportunity to read the same books with their new friends, discuss what they read, and engage in activities based on the books they share. The students will read a different picture book each day! They will be able to improve their literacy skills, participate in critical thinking exercises, and enjoy social interaction with their peers.

Live Action Film Academy

The May Literacy Center Live Action Film Academy lights up for young filmmakers working together to produce their visions on screen. Students hone their writing skills and produce and act in their own short films. Students engage in storyboarding, script writing, filming, and video editing using the latest software tools. A final showcase lets them share their films with family and friends.

Scavenger Hunt Academy

This half-day academy will provide many opportunities for fun, team building, exercise, and critical thinking while two teams of students search the campus of ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ for clues and hidden objects!  The teams will be led by instructors and teaching assistants who will make sure the students navigate the campus safely and have game-winning support!

Cultivating the Roots of Migrant Students

Prerequisite: Students must qualify for the Migrant Education Program, the National Farmworker Jobs Program, or obtain permission from the College Assistance Migrant Program Director.

This academy is designed to serve students who qualify for the Migrant Education Program and who are in grades 6 to 12. Through a focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math), students will engage in academic learning in a university context while having fun!

  • Middle/High School – Grades 6th to 12th

Sprouting Success for Migrant Students

Prerequisite: Students must qualify for the Migrant Education Program, the National Farmworker Jobs Program, or obtain permission from the College Assistance Migrant Program Director.

This academy is designed to serve students who qualify for the Migrant Education Program and who are in grades K to 5. Through a focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math), students will engage in academic learning in a university context while having fun!
