The American Chemical Society
The offers a variety of services and information regarding job searching for its members. You may find that membership is worthwhile for several reasons such as discounted journal subscriptions. The ACS is the largest single professional organization for chemists in the United States.
Chemical and Engineering News
The magazine Chemical and Engineering News is published by the ACS and features along with general information about the chemical industry job listings from around the country. The jobs posted fall into two categories: academic and industrial. Many (or most) of the academic positions are at the college level and require a doctorate in chemistry while the postings for industrial positions are aimed at those with bachelor's degrees or higher education. It is perhaps the most important source of nationwide job information and is available at the SU Library. Most of the top chemical and pharmaceutical firms in the country advertise there. Members of the ACS who are unemployed for a length of time after graduation may advertise their availability for work at no cost providing certain circumstances are met.
Informative Pamphlets
Many helpful pamphlets are available (free or nominal cost to ACS members) through the ACS. A small selection from the list includes ACS Career Services Catalog: Your Ticket to a Brighter Future; Department of Career Services Bulletin; Employer Mailing List; Starting Salary Survey; Resources for Career Management and many more. These are available by calling 1-800-227-5558 or e-mailing careers@acs.org.
