Elementary Education Program at Eastern Shore Higher Education Center

¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥’s Elementary Teacher Preparation Program is a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (grades 1-6) and is accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP) and Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). This program, implemented in a cohort model since 2007, is offered at the Eastern Shore Higher Education Center () located on the campus of Chesapeake College. This enables students on the upper and mid-shore area to complete their course work close to home. In addition, advising sessions and registration assistance is offered at the ESHEC site. It is recommended that students have earned their Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) or meet all of the requirements on the major. Visit the University catalog for details:

Program Highlights

  • All classes are offered in the evenings.students sitting and talking in classroom
  • Course are offered in face-to-face and taught by SU’s professional and accomplished staff.
  • Students are assigned Clinical placements each semester, located in Talbot and Caroline Counties.
  • Two eight-week internships are completed in the final semester in which students are supervised by a qualified teaching professional who provides feedback in addition to a mentor teacher.

Eligibility

  • Students who have completed their AAT.
  • Students who have not completed the AAT must meet entrance requirements to be admitted to the program. These include:
    • Complete a minimum of 46 hours in the elementary education program with an overall GPA 2.50 or higher (including transfer courses). Any courses older than seven years are subject to review for acceptance toward fulfilling degree requirements.
    • Maintain a 2.75 GPA or greater in the required pre-professional courses. The Praxis Core is no longer required by the State of Maryland for admittance in the teacher education program. However, the Maryland State Department of Education requires teacher candidates who graduate with an overall GPA of 3.0 or greater to take the Praxis Core or submit other qualifying scores.
    • Exhibit appropriate professional program candidate dispositions. Professional dispositions are the values, commitments and professional ethics that influence behaviors toward students, families, colleagues and communities and affect student learning, motivation and development as well as the educator’s own professional growth.
    • Submit a Professional Teacher Education Program application to the education advisor by the established deadline set by the Early and Elementary Education Department. The online application must be submitted prior to the semester the candidate wishes to enroll in professional education courses.
